About

El universo es, como tú, Proteo. --Jorge Louis Borges

PROTEO is dedicated to furthering the dialogue between literature and philosophy.

Leave it to Borges to have so eloquently stated, yet again, one of the fundamental truths of our experience:  the physical universe, our bodies, our thoughts, everything is in flux.  Borges rescues this truth from triviality by renewing our capacity for wonder with a rhetorical image (personification).  Proteus figures unforgettably in the Odyssey, where Menelaus ambushes and pins down the shape-shifting sea-god to interrogate him about the past, present, and future.  What a suggestive image of humanity’s pursuit of knowledge, whose object has been and remains the phenomena of nature, but also ourselves, as part and parcel of the change we see everywhere.

Borges is an appropriate intercessor to evoke for this project, which seeks to bring literature and philosophy into dialogue through a series of conversations, organized around a text and/or presentation, in an informal setting, where questions, answers, and comments may be freely exchanged.  Each semester participants meet to discuss a text and/or a scholarly paper.  This platform will announce all relevant information pertaining to the meetings (date, time, place, and topic, including a working copy of the text, if available).  It will also permit the conversation to continue beyond the immediate occasion.

In the future, look to this site for announcements about conferences, round-tables, and lectures that may be of interest.

To become a participant, attend the next meeting and ask to have your email added to the list.  All faculty and students are welcome.  We are currently seeking an amanuensis who would take notes during the meeting and upload the transcript to the site.
